5 Tips to Stay Safe When Headed Back to School

As you settle into back-to-school mode, whether you’re a college student or you’ve already graduated, now is a great time to check in with yourself and rate your personal safety smarts.

Check out these five tips and let us know how you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 and why. Where 1 is the least safe and 10 is the most. Let us know what you do best and where you may need some more safety practice. If you leave your comments below, we will choose 1 winner to receive our prize pack: a Sabre Dorm/Apartment Safety Kit and a Hear Me Roar book!

1) Check your posture:

We communicate to the outside world with our bodies, even more so than with our words. How you stand, walk and carry yourself can deter a potential attacker or make you a walking target. Keep your shoulders back and your head and eyes up as you walk about in public. This lets others know you are confident and not vulnerable, weak or scared.

2) Always travel in packs:

A predator is way less likely to attack a pack than a lone wolf. Whether you’re going out for a night on the town or walking back to your dorm/apartment after a long night at the library, make sure you have company.

3) Get off your phone:

While out and about don’t be distracted by your texts, voicemails or other apps. All of that can wait until you are safely inside. Catching up on Instagram is way less important than keeping yourself fully aware of what is happening around you.

4) Don’t go out with preeps (potential creeps):

In our new book, Hear Me Roar: How to Defend Your Mind, Body and Heart Against People Who Suck (http://www.hearmeroarbook.com) we outline twenty ways you can spot a potential creep. But here’s one big clue: if he treats others with disrespect (his mother, his sisters, his teachers, dogs, cats or ex-girlfriends), chances are he’s going to treat you poorly too. So, how does that keep you safe? Well, if guys who have violent tendencies, and then are fueled by alcohol, you have a perfect storm for aggressive behavior that could lead to violence. So, keeping an eye out for any warning signs in guys you or your friends may want to go out with is a great way to avoid danger in the first place. For more tips on dating, domestic violence and d*cks, check out our book Hear Me Roar here! (http://www.hearmeroarbook.com)

5) Keep Your Home Safe:

Whether you live in a one-room dorm or share an apartment with friends, it’s important to make your home your safe haven. Keep your doors locked at night, always. Use the double bolt if you have one. Also keep your valuables out of sight. Not only do you not want them stolen, but you don’t want anyone to be tempted to break in when you’re home or not. And last but not least, keep your windows locked! I’ve heard stories of men coming in women’s windows from a fire-escape! Scary but it’s real.

Pay attention, be safe and make sure the world can HEAR YOU ROAR!

With love,

Jennifer

  1. Jess says:

When it comes to safety, I best protect myself by keeping doors locked and being cautious when I go somewhere new. However, I need to remind myself to be more aware of my everyday surroundings–particularly when I’m somewhere I know–by getting off the phone or just noticing who’s around me.

I always lock my doors and leave my windows safety latched when opened. I could use more help when I take walks, sometimes I think that nothing can go wrong in my neighborhood.

I always ALWAYS make sure a friend knows where I’ll be when I’m going out, and when I’m planning on being back. And of course locking doors and windows:)
